Joanna Malcolm - Singer/Tambourine
Shaker -
Joanna
grew up in a small South Carolina town in
a home that nurtured and encouraged her musical
talents. From a young age, she was always
singing--entertaining and surely annoying
her parents! She started taking piano lessons
at 5, and was even a student of her father's
Suzuki violin class. By the time she graduated
high school, Joanna had stared in numerous
musicals and plays, performed in many piano
recitals, played flute and was drum major
of the marching band, and was taking private
flute and voice lessons. (Obviously it would
be several more years before she would be
considered "cool"!)
Joanna
studied Voice at the University of South Carolina,
where she was involved in the university's
show choir - Carolina Alive, The University
Chorus, and Concert Choir-- USC's top vocal
group. She was a soloist with the Concert
Choir's jazz ensemble that toured Europe,
performing Duke Ellington's "Sacred Service"
in venues across England and France.
But
probably the most influential and exciting
group Joanna was in was the college pop-punk
band, The SInators. The 5 piece group performed
original songs and stage antics all over the
Columbia SC area, and released a full length
album in October 2001. The Sinators were only
together for about 2 years, but Joanna learned
from those boys what it meant to put on a
show-- More Rock, Less Talk!!
After
graduating college, Joanna did not sing or
perform for 2 years. She bounced around to
different cities and jobs, looking for the
perfect fit. When she moved to Asheville 2
years ago, she finally found her outlet: she
landed two musical roles within a year at
Asheville Community Theatre. She was a sassy
"Tree" among other various characters
in their 2005 production of "The Wizard
of Oz" and was the lovable Hungarian
maid, Anna in ACT's 2006 World Premier of
Ted Swindley's "Bachelor Pad."

David Batts - Guitarist/Vocalist
-
On
guitar and vocals, originally from Charlotte,
NC, David Batts moved to Asheville, NC in
1998 to pursue his dream of being a professional
musician. Having grown up with a love for
many styles of music, David has studied rock,
pop, jazz, blues, funk, and classical in an
effort to be versatile and well rounded. This
background has been a perfect match for the
wide diversity of musical styles that Orange
Krush provides at their performances. As David
has said before, “There’s nothing
like being able to make an evening special
for five generations of tastes.” Like
his bandmates, David brings professionalism
to Orange Krush by drawing on experience in
many areas of the music industry including
operating his own recording studio, composing
original music, and performing in a church
band. It is this balance in his professional
life along with the beautiful surroundings
and social awareness of the community in Asheville
that allow him the happiness he shares with
his friends, family, and audiences.
